High-acyl Gellan Gum
As a Functional Polyacrylate Substitute
Is it possible to replace the acrylic acid polymers in a reformulation one to one?
The answer is YES.
Findings from our sensory research project confirm that gellan gum (Kelcogel CG-HA) can be used as a substitute for crosspolymers, with no major sensory impact.
In an after sun cream-gel emulsion, a typical polyacrylate crosspolymer was compared with the natural substance gellan gum. Particular emphasis was placed on the evaluation of the sensory attributes ‘body’, ‘quick-break’ and ‘long play’. Results show gellan gum makes it possible to build up a similar texture to polyacrylates, without being noticed by the consumer.
Gellan gum is a polysaccharide produced by fermentation of the bacterium Sphingomonas elodea, which occurs naturally on water lily leaves.
