Nearly every woman considers cellulite to be a visual flaw. This was not always the case though. In 1962 it didn’t seem to bother anyone that Bond Girl Ursula Andress’ thighs were by no means toned-up in the glaring South Sea sun. In one of the first articles written about cellulite, the US magazine “Vogue” explained in 1973 that the dents in the thighs, stomach and buttocks were something not perceived to be beautiful; before these women’s legs simply looked this way.

A lot has changed since then. Cellulite is today Enemy No. 1 of the female beauty ideal and simultaneously the basis for the existence of an entire sector. Worldwide, approx. €1.1 billion is spent on cosmetic anti-cellulite products each year. But what is the phenomenon about cellulite really?
