Psoriasis - painful and embarrassing

Psoriasis is a multifactorial disease for which even today there is still no cure. It is the result of complex environmental influences and genetic predisposition of the skin.

125 million people worldwide suffer from psoriasis with symptoms like scaling, bleeding, itching, swelling, burning, erythema and fatigue. They are confronted with a daily struggle. By hiding the flaky skin, their daily life is strongly affected and this can even lead to psychological repercussions.

Epigenetic stress and a disbalanced microbiota can kickstart psoriasis

Psoriasis is characterised by very dry, red and scaly skin. It can be localised or spread over large areas of the body. The development of psoriasis is still not precisely understood, but it seems to be caused by a certain autoreactivity towards the body’s own proteins and an associated over-activation of a subset of T-cells. An altered epigenetic landscape in various skin cells also plays a role here, and this manifests itself in the form of the continuous inflammatory altered skin situation that is triggered in this way. Furthermore, a disturbed microbiota can allow bacteria to colonise the skin, aggravating the inflammatory state and activating defence mechanisms, leading to overreactions that can take the form of psoriasis.

Psoriasis is currently not curable. We can only reduce the painful and unpleasant symptoms and thus give the affected persons back their quality of life.
